Despite the catastrophic destruction of the city caused by the bombing, there are still things that have survived and continued to exist to this day—buildings, bridges, trees, and monuments. This book, “Hiroshima Monument”, is a compilation of four-frame photographs taken as fixed-point observations by photographer Hiromi Tsuchida of 48 such objects -"monuments" scattered throughout the city over a span of 45 years from 1979 to 2025, roughly every decade. This series forms a crucial part of the artist's Hiroshima Trilogy, alongside “Hiroshima 1945–1979”, which involved interviews with atomic bomb survivors, and “Hiroshima Collection”, which documented A-bomb-related artifacts. Under the circumstance where the events obliviate over the 80 years since, this long-term fixed-point observation aims to visualize how the “present” is always connected to both the past and the future. The artist raises the question that by doing so, it may even become possible to anticipate the rapidly shifting future. This large-scale project began from the artist’s strong sense of mission: that Hiroshima must be remembered as a city that itself serves as a "monument of the century."
