However, in this land that many describe as "empty," a landscape of emptiness, and for me, it resonates more strongly with the essence of nature than landscapes, more than urban landscapes. (From the artist statement) We are pleased to announce the publication of Atsushi Yoshie's “Exit Town,” winner of the 25th Jun Miki Award, by Fugensha. This work, “Exit Town,” is set in Ota City, Gunma Prefecture, where Atsushi Yoshie was born and raised and still lives. The photographs was shot using medium- and large-format film camera with a tripod. This book contains 85 photographs taken between 2017 until 2024 which shared the same name. Through his photographs, Yoshie depicts his hometown as a “Fukidamari(a place where wind blows and causes things to accumulate) of the Kanto Plain” where various things are pushed out daily from the main road, a half-hearted, featureless landscape that is the opposite of the word “scenic. The Tone River, which flows on the outskirts of the town, is a bleak place where strong winds blow from the mountains in winter, and the lees and excrement from the urban area are visible through the dead grass. The artist described it as an “Exit Town. The “empty landscape” of a “Hometown to which one has no attachment” is, in turn, a scene that appeals to one more strongly than any other spectacular scenery as the natural environment surrounding one's own life.
